It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. Proverbs 25:2

The Power of Words – Words are important

Words are Important

The Bible has many examples of how faith is exhibited by the words people have spoken. We see the power of the spoken word and understand it has the ability to create, and by faith these words impact our future. The words we say can change our attitude and if we speak the right words, lining them up with God’s words, our attitude can change our perspective and how we view things. When we are believing right, it will change our actions to line up with what we know is right.

Hebrews11:3   By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light

God the Creator has said we were created in His image, in His likeness for His glory. Instead of us listening to God we have allowed the enemy, people, schools, jobs and our society to define who we are and how we view ourselves.  This fallen world system wants to push us into believing that we are less than who God says we are.  Instead, they want us to allow them to determine who we are and what we can or cannot do.

We have heard people speak words about a person and because they may have heard part of a conversation they walk away with some misconception. Their attitude, feelings and thoughts are negative toward that situation, but when the truth of the matter is spoken or revealed the attitude could change.  The enemy has lied to us about who we are, speaking words that has marred the way we feel about ourselves and others. When we learn the truth of God’s word and begin speaking His truth into our lives and over our families, we can change our behavior and actions to line up with the truth of who God says we are.

John1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Life and death are in the power of the tongue.

Satan is the same enemy who tricked Eve into believing a lie, that God did not want them to be as God. God created them for that very purpose, to be as God over the earth. Satan is using the same trick on humanity today, to have us believe that same lie, that God does not love or care about us.  Satan would have us to focus on nonessentials in this rat-race of life’s deceptions, distractions and anxieties to keep us from God’s word and to leave us and our communities open to his demise.

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Psalms 45: 1 My heart is overflowing with a good theme; I recite my composition concerning the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

We are to use our God given abilities to think on the things of God and use our tongue to be the pen of a ready writer to write love, hope and the grace of God on our hearts and in the hearts of others.  The truth of God’s word can dispel the lies the world has planted in us and has said about us. With faith in God’s unfailing love for us we are able to stand in the midst of adversity with a hope for our future. This hope goes far beyond this present moment, when we realize the plans, thoughts and the love God has for us now and for all eternity.

Isaiah 57:19 I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “And I will heal him.”

The scriptures say we are more than conquerors in this world and that we are kings and priests before God.  There are also words that come from Satan, the father of lies who comes to kill, steal and destroy mankind and their created purpose, which is to reflect the image of God.

Malachi 2:17 You have wearied the LORD with your words. “How have we wearied him?” you ask. By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?”

Malachi 3:13-14 “Your words have been harsh against Me,” Says the Lord, “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’ You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God; What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, And that we have walked as mourners Before the Lord of hosts?

Every Word will be judged!

Now there are two systems operating in the world today, the kingdom of God and the lies of a fallen world system which is under the influence of sin.   Everyone is born into this fallen world system through Adam but can choose to be re-born into the family and kingdom of God through the confession of their words of faith in Jesus Christ.

Words are important because we understand the world was created by the power of God’s spoken word. It is the act of the spoken word which the expression of faith that brings us into redemption and it is also this belief that puts us in right standing with God.

Proverbs 10:19-20 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is worth little.

Matthew 12:36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

Matthew 12:37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Out of the heart the mouth speaks

Belief turns to faith when we take our beliefs and put then action with it. We may believe in our hearts a thing is true, but we cultivate our faith when we express it through words and actions. By this we are acknowledging our belief to the entire world both the seen and the unseen. We declared the position that we stand on and operate in with every detail of our lives by the words we speak and how we live.

The word of God tells us we can tell the type of heart a person has by listening to the words they speak. It is important to listen as well as watch. People can change their actions for a short time but what is buried in their hearts comes through the very wellspring of their being through their words and eventually their behavior.

Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

What we truly believe in our hearts, will become the topics that we speak on. The righteousness of faith speaks what God says about the matter.   Through the confession of words by faith in the completed work of Jesus, His birth, death, and resurrection we are made righteous. Those who are righteous are those who are placed back into right standing with God.

Only God, by the power of the Holy Spirit can tame the tongue.

The way we tame the tongue is by knowing God’s word.  We are to have a desire and a hunger for His word for our spiritual growth, just as we need food for our natural bodies.  As we grow in God’s word our spirit grows and the Holy Spirit helps us to tame the unruly and evil speaking of the tongue.

Believers in Jesus are to confess and declare with their mouth the words of truth and affirmation to themselves and others as they begin operating in those truths.

James 3: 8-11but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?

Psalm 141: 3-4a Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers

There are benefits to training the tongue to speak words of life and words about God’s love and mercy!

We can choose to ask the Holy Spirit to line our hearts up with the word of God and set a guard over our mouth that we may discipline our tongue. The Bible says the tongue is deadly as poison, evil and untamable by mankind, therefore we should pray and ask God to help us bridle our tongue.

As true followers of Christ we are to bridle our tongue and to set a watch over our words and to train our emotions to love and not to hate. We are to do this through the power of the Holy Spirit living in us. This is a hard task for everyone and cannot be done in our own strength.  It is a practiced skill, and practice makes better.

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Proverbs 12:14 From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward

Malachi 3:16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, And the LORD listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the LORD And who meditate on His name

Use your words to create and build and not to teardown.

That which is broken can be made whole, with your words of healing.

That which is lost can be saved, with your words of life.

That which is in darkness can be brought into light, with your words of truth.

It is a practiced skill to hold the tongue, to watch the words we speak.  Practice makes better!
